Essential October Tax Deadlines and Compliance

As October ushers in cooler weather, it also brings critical tax deadlines for individuals. For those who requested a 6-month extension, October 15 is the pivotal date to finalize your 2024 Form 1040 and settle any remaining taxes.

October 10 - Report Tips to Employer:
If you’re an employee receiving tips over $20 during September, report them to your employer using IRS Form 4070 by October 10. Your employer will need to withhold FICA taxes and income tax from your regular wages to cover these tips. Should your wages fall short of covering these withholdings, the uncollected amount will appear in box 8 of your W-2, requiring payment when you file your annual return.

October 15 - Taxpayers with Foreign Financial Interests:
Those who secured an automatic 6-month pause to declare foreign financial accounts should remember this important due date for submitting Form FinCEN 114 to the Department of the Treasury.

October 15 - Individuals:
This date also marks the deadline for individuals who requested an extension to file their 2024 income tax return. Ensure that Form 1040 is filed and all due taxes, interest, and penalties are paid to avoid any legal or financial repercussions.

Weekends & Holidays:
Be aware that if a deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, it automatically extends to the next business day.

Disaster Area Extensions:
If your area is designated a disaster zone, deadlines may be extended. For the latest information on disaster declarations and extensions, refer to these resources:
